• Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology Industry – Mergers and Acquisitions
        – a review of M&A from 2005 t0 2011.  A review of the recent
acquisitions and mergers of the industry indicate the following trends:
Consolidation in medical device, generic and consumer health segment
of the healthcare industry. Mergers and acquisitions were successful
if driven by a blockbuster marketed products like Lipitor
(Pfizer- Werner Lambert), Cialis (Lilly-ICOS) and Erbitux
(Lilly-ImClone). If a company was acquired for its R&D pipeline and
development projects or platform technology, in majority of cases,
the acquiring company failed to derive full benefits and most of the
projects were later discontinued or terminated. Diversified companies
like Roche, J&J, Abbott and Novartis with devices, generics and diagnostic
performed better as compared to pure pharmaceutical R&D driven company like
Pfizer and Merck. With the $68 billion bid by Pfizer for Wyeth,
$41billion for Schering Plough by Merck and $47 billion bid by Roche
for Genentech has given a great start to 2009 M&A activity. Sepracor
was acquired for $2.6 billion by Dainippon Sumitomo of Japan. Novartis
has started the year 2010 by acquiring 77% of Alcon the eye care unit
of Nestle and has paid a total of $50 billion
        ( $ 10 billion in 2009 + $28 billion in 2010 ). Merck KGA $6 billion OPA
for Millipore, Astellas $ 4 Bn bid for OSI pharma and Celgene acquisition
of Abraxis for 2.9 billion bring the focus back to biotechnology. Teva buyout
of German generic Ratiopharm for $ 5 billion once again shows the importance
of generics. Sanofi Aventis has launched a hostile bid for Genzyme with a $ 18.5 billion
merger offer. Vaccines are hot area with the J&J offer of $2.3 billion for
Crucell. Pfizer has bought King pharma for 3.6 billion to dilute the impact
of Lipitor patent expiry and get some analgesic drugs. Amgen in 2011 paid
1 billion to acquire BioVex for its OncoVex cancer vaccine in Phase III.
Sanofi Aventis hostile bid followed by talks resulted in takeover of Genzyme
for 20 billion dollars in 2011. Valeant has launched a hostile bid for the takeover
of Cephalon for $ 5.7 billion, a 27% premium to its market price. Teva has acquired
Cephalon for $ 6.2 billion. Johnson & Johnson acquired Synthes for 21.3 billion dollars.
Takeda has acquired Nycomed for $13,6 Billion.

have climbed to $2,2 billion.

Lipitor sales are declining in some markets
due to generic competition.

Mylan profits rose 71% in the 1st quarter,
mostly due to increasing sales in North America.
The company attributed the increase in profits
due to new product launches, a favourable
product mix and the acquisition of Bioniche Pharma
in September 2010.

In the USA more and more doctors are seeking
on-line drug information. E-detailing is
emerging as a strong marketing tool.

Sanofi Aventis have ratified a name change

per annum. The market is now estimated
to be around $75 billion dollars. Many
of the "fakes" are being sent from China.
Some are very difficult to distinguish from the
"true" product. Others are poor imitations.
Not all of the "fake" products have active
ingredients in them.

Mylan and Ranbaxy are in a court battle over
the marketing of the generic of Lipitor in
the USA. As things stand Ranbaxy will have
6 months exclusivity to the huge USA market from around
November 2011.

Business Schools in America that have traditionally
excelled at training hard skills such as finance
and accounting are now offering more "soft skills"
programmes. Soft skills are  skills such as
accepting feedback and communicating with subordinates.

Johnson & Johnson has recalled batches of Prezista
(HIV drug) due to contamination with a fungicide.
Johnson & Johnson has acquired Synthes. J& J were
after the Synthes Spinal Product Portfolio.

It is RUMOURED that Japanese Takeda is in talks
to acquire Nycomed. Nycomed earned 774 million Euros last year. The company could fetch 5,5 billion Euros and would be Takedas largest acquisition since Millenium
Pharmaceuticals in 2008.

A study suggests that patients are at risk of
subsequent heart attack death following short
term treatment with NSAIDs ( anti-inflammatories).
In January of 2011 Aspen Pharmacare acquired Australia's
Sigma Pharmaceuticals for R6,1 billion.
This will make Aspen Pharmacare the leading Australian
Pharmaceutical company in terms of volume of scripts.

Glaxo Smith Kline has previously bought a 16 % share in
Aspen Pharmacare. They have recently acquired the rights
to market the UCB Sa ( AHN) product portfolio.
There is also talk of a collaboration with Pfizer and the
marketing of ARVs (anti-retrovirals.)

2500 Pharmaceutical Representatives in the USA have sued their employers (Novartis, Astra and Abbott) for overtime worked since 2001. There have been two court rulings in different States, one granting the overtime and the other not. The cases are going to be appealed. In SA, our laws are different, and overtime is only paid to those earning under the "threshold" ( R149 736 pa) rate. The payment of overtime is governed by the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. Overtime is not compulsory.

US drug spending grew 2,3% in 2010, down from 5,3 % growth in 2009. This is largely due to the increased use of generics as drugs come off patent.

Eli Lilly is developing several Diabetes compounds with Boehringer Ingelheim. This expenditure plus the cost of re-structuring has caused a significant drop in earnings for the company.

Merck & co and Johnson & Johnson have reached a deal over the marketing of Remicade and Simponi ( Rheumatoid Arthritis drugs). Johnson & Johnson had asked for arbitration on this matter, following the Merck merger with Schering Plough.

European Medicines Agency ( EMA) has approved Boehringer Ingelheim's Pradaxa for prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation ( AF). It had already been approved in the US in October last year. It has also been approved for use in patients having hip and knee replacements for prevention of DVT. (Deep Vein Thrombosis).

Pfizer has announced positive data on it's Stage 111 trial on tofacitinib for Rheumatoid Arthritis.

New developments in the treatment of Diabetes - on the way.

Insulin inhalers
Although daily injections of insulin would still be needed, inhaled insulin is currently in clinical trials and may be headed for a fast track approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These inhalers are about the size of a flashlight and uses rapid-acting insulin. The sprayed insulin is inhaled into the mouth and coats the mouth, throat and tongue. The insulin passes quickly into the bloodstream.

Insulin Pill
The discovery of a new polymer that may allow development of an effective insulin pill was reported at a recent meeting of the American Chemical Society. When the polymer is used as a pill coating, it allows insulin to get into the bloodstream without being destroyed by the digestive system. So far it has only been tested in animals. Some experts question whether insulin in pill form will prove useful, since dosing is so critical and often variable.

Exciting Times!
Friday, March 25, 2011

25th March 2011.

This year has started with fervent activity in the Medical Recruitment Field. We are thrilled to,once again, getting larger volumes of really good and interesting positions to work on. We are not yet, back to pre-recession levels, but it is pretty close.

We are delighted to have been voted " Medical Recruitment Company Most Chosen in 2010". This is third consecutive year that we have won this award. Thank you to our clients and candidates for voting us in again. We are very proud of this achievement and work hard to retain it.

This year we have expanded our team with the addition of Kris Bronkhorst, as a junior consultant in our Gauteng office. Kris has worked for us part-time for four years whilst studying and he has taken to consulting like a duck to water. We also welcome Maropeng Mokgola as an additional receptionist/secretary in our Gauteng branch. We also welcome Kelly Clark, who has joined us, also on the Gauteng team, as a part-time receptionist and Lauren Lyons, who has joined us in the Cape Town office as Client Liaison and Business Development Representative.

We are very sad to state that Jill Rubin, our PE consultant is leaving our full-time employment. After 5 very busy and successful years, Jill has decided to take a break from recruitment. She will, however, still be assisting us with interviews and we have something else up our sleeves for later announcement.

Tania Tomaselli, will be taking over the Eastern Cape recruitment. Tania has been with us for almost 4 years and is a highly competent and successful consultant.

On recent client visits, our clients are feeling positive and, for the most part, are achieving what they need to achieve. We have heard of several companies having developments, from line extensions to new divisions. The 2011 Financial Year looks robust.

Clients, please, if you have vacancies in April, get started on them early. April will be a very short month and booking flights  and venues for interviews will be tricky and costly. We have excellent candidates available, at all times. Our 7 consultants, interview at least 3 pre-screened and checked candidates per day.

Warmest regards,

Eta

Recruitment after the World Cup 2010
Wednesday, September 15, 2010

2010 has rushed past at an unrelenting pace. For those of us not involved in Tourism and Travel, the World Cup provided a quieter period in an, otherwise, busy year.

We all waved our flags and blew our Vuvuzelas in the office, specially when we made lovely placements. As I was born in Holland and still have cousins there, I was particularly excited that the Netherlands made it to the finals.

The market has picked up significantly this year and we have had an array of varied and interesting positions. We expect to have busy months in October and November, many of  those positions to start in January, so if 2011 is your year for a new challenge, now is the time to update your CV and get the ball rolling.

At the moment, we have a Medical Director position in Cape Town - a rare and  exciting opportunity.

For new graduates, looking to be placed in the New Year, now is the time to write a comprehensive CV, research what is required in interviews, and approach one or two really good recruitment companies  who specialise in your field of choice.

Enjoy the challenge, and treat your search for a good position as a job in itself.

Kind Regards

Eta Lyons

Upcoming position for 2010
Friday, August 14, 2009

I am pleased to say that there has been a definite upturn in recruitment. We are getting more job specifications in, and have some excellent UPCOMING POSITIONS FOR 2010. If you are planning to make a move early in the New Year, come and see us now. In many cases, positions come in, and the client wants CV's within a couple of days. Apply now - January appointments are made in October and November.

Our Consultants are there to consult with YOU and the client. We will advise, counsel and assist you to decide what is best for y ou. In many cases, we find Representatives applying for positions without understanding exactly what is required. For the Moms wanting to get back into the surgical field, you must be aware, you need to be scrubbed and in theatre several times a week by 07h00. Most creches only open at 07h30. Be aware of that.

Assess what is really important for you and plan a new position accordingly. There is nothing worse than being in a position that does not suit you. It is stressful and ultimately, wears down your energy and self-esteem.

There are many wonderful companies out there, but not all of them will suit YOU.

Good luck and we look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Eta Lyons

Are you getting the best advice?
Thursday, September 03, 2009

The past year has seen the recruitment industry under pressure. Indeed, many recruitment agencies have closed their doors.

In an attempt to hold on to good candidates and clients, some recruiters give the candidates and clients advice that is really self serving. To try and prevent the client and candidate from going to other recruitment companies, they promise to give special service to the candidate or client.

Sure, they will give them special service BUT, no single recruiter has all the best candidates or all the best clients. Recruiting is a personal service and, for no particular reason, some clients and candidates do not like a particular recruiter. Therefore, will not give them the opportunities.

In the past few months, we have seen clients and candidates who have missed WONDERFUL opportunities through this very practice.

My honest, heartfelt advice, if you are a candidate or a client, is to give your business to two respected recruiters, to ensure that they have covered all bases.

If your recruiter sends out your CV without telling you the name of the company and without interviewing you, they are doing you a great disservice. There is no way that they can do you justice and they will decrease your chances of getting that plum position.

Be discerning, sensible and professional in your search and you will have the success that you desire.

Good luck,

Eta Lyons

The end of the year
Thursday, December 17, 2009

"The companies that survive the longest are the ones that work out what they uniquely can give to the world not just growth or money but their excellence, their respect for others, or their ability to make people happy. Some call those things a soul." - Charles Handy

Compliments of the season to you. We wish you a safe, fun and happy Season. It is the time when most of us in the industry take a break and catch our breath.

This quote from Leonardo da Vinci is so true - several hundred years later. "Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen."

2010 is the year of teams, goals and success. Are you in the right team to achieve your goals, do you have the right team working with you? If not, contact us or send an updated CV. Have you set your goals for 2010 - career, personal, spiritual, relationship and sporting. If not, think about them and commit them to paper early in January. Remember, a goal that is not specific, measurable with a realistic timeline is just a dream.

We achieved most, but not all, of our goals for 2009. Our goals for 2010 are in line with our industry, the Equity goals of our clients and the career advancement of our candidates.

We have worked hard to achieve our reputation as the Leading Medical Recruitment company in South Africa, but we have our excellent candidates and clients to thank for their support.

So, A BIG THANK YOU to you. Our offices will be closed from 21 December until the 4th of January 2010.

Our clients all have my cell phone number for urgent positions all round the country. If you require help or assistance you can email me and I will reply eta@etalyons.co.za

Travel safely, rest well and have a Fabulous Festive Season.

Kind regards

Eta Lyons

Compliments of the Season
Friday, January 15, 2010

2010 with all it's hype and excitement are already underway. We have already been assigned a large number of quality positions in all major centres.

2009 was a difficult year in the recruitment field, with many positions being frozen by the Global companies either because of the recession or because of pending mergers.

Nontheless, we had a very good year, although at times, it was frustrating to our Consultants, our candidates and the Managers, who often were on the point of offering to a chosen candidate and then the position was frozen.

We placed positions ranging from Business Unit Managers, National Sales Managers, Product Managers and Regional Managers. At sales level we placed candidates in a wide range of positions from Oncology, Wound Care, Renal Dialysis, Molecular Biology, Diabetes, Orthopaedics and, of course, many GP and OTC positions.

2010 promises to be year of zip, zest and zing. The world cup in the middle of the year may prove to be a recruitment challenge for both companies and our candidates. Please approach us sooner, rather than later, so we can navigate our way round the mid-year Foodball mania. Hotel and flight bookings will be both difficult and expensive.

With our many years of experience we can promise you professionalism, confidentiality and fast and efficient service.

We wish you your own personal zip, zest and zing for a successful and satisfying 2010.

Kind regards

 Eta Lyons

Voted the No. 1 Medical Recruitment Co in 2008
Tuesday, May 05, 2009

We work very hard for our candidates and clients to make sure that we match the two together very carefully. I know that some candidates are frustrated at the moment because placing them seems to be taking a long time. This is very much due to the recession. Also, many of the large multinational companies have frozen their headcounts, despite the fact that their SA branches are doing very well.

There are several mergers and acquisitions in process. GlaxoSmithKline is buying Stiefel Laboratories. Mercke Sharpe and Dohme and Schering Plough are in the middle of a merger. Pfizer is in the process of buying Wyeth and in SA, Adcock Ingram have made an offer to purchase Cipla Medpro. I believe that that offer has not been accepted. We will hear more in due course.

If you are in the industry and wanting to make a move it is imperative that you send your CV and come for an interview ASAP. We do not advertise all the positions that we get in and often our clients will send us a spec on Tuesday and want to interview on Friday. If you have not been interviewed and reference checked, you may miss out on a "dream" position.

Our Johannesburg branch has a huge need for Product Managers.

We have another long weekend and short week ahead. Please drive safety and take care.

Kind regards

Eta

Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2011.
Friday, January 14, 2011

We Wish all readers a very Happy,Healthy and Prosperous 2011.

It is the beginning of a New Year, a time review our careers and set new goals. The 2010 excitement is now history, but has left us all with a new sense of pride and confidence in our country. A stable platform from which to grow and develop. Several of our clients are expanding which creates exciting opportunities for existing and new employees.

Recruitment was much more active in 2010 than 2009. 2011 has started off with a great deal of activity. We currently have very exciting positions open in all regions. We recruit Medical Representatives from rookie to Senior Medical Representative level. The Medical Management positions we recruit are from Regional Sales Managers to Commercial Director, Senior Medical Director, Regulatory Affairs and so on.

The industry had been particularly exciting in the last 12 months, with new Pharmaceutical and Medical Device companies and products entering the market on a monthly basis.

In the Surgical / Medical Device market, some products have been moved from one distributor to another, and there is a great deal of recruitment happening right now..

We do not advertise all the positions which are assigned to us. If you are an experienced Medical Representative or Medical Manager and are looking to move in 2011, please send us your CV as soon as possible. Before we can send your CV out, we need to interview you, check references and do our own quality checks. Our 7 consultants interview 3 - 4 Medical Sales candidates per day but the process does take a while to complete.

We are here to help you find your best possible Medical Sales Representative or Medical Manager position in 2011.

Our record Medical Representative Placements in the last almost 25 years, attest to our Excellence in Medical Recruitment. Many of the candidates placed previously are now in Senior positions in the industry, including the CEO of one Global Company whom we placed as a Rookie Medical Representative in the late 80s.

We were voted Medical Recruitment Company of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2009. ( 2010 results are not out, yet)

Good luck and have a blast.
