1What qualifications do I need to become a Medical Sales Representative?
You need to have a Degree or 4 year Diploma, preferably in the Biomedical Sciences field. This would include BSC, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Medical Technology, Nursing, Pharmacy, Human Movement Science or similar. A valid driver’s licence is essential
2What do Medical Representatives do?
The job is primarily a relationship building and selling job. If the idea of selling products does not appeal to you, this is probably not the correct field for you. It is also important to mention that there are many different types of Representatives.
3Is Medical Sales just a job, or is there a future career ahead of me?
For the right candidates there is a very definitely a career path. You can move up the ladder to sales management, product management, training, business unit manager and several other areas. Many of the candidates we have placed , over the years, are now in senior positions in South Africa, the USA, the UK, and the middle East.
4I have a driver’s licence but I don’t really like driving, will that be a problem?
Yes, Medical Representatives are “on the move” all day. There are many frustrations with traffic and parking problems
5I am currently a Medical Representative, but the evening meetings and country trips get me down?
Unfortunately, most Medical Sales positions have some after hours work and there are also country trips and conferences to attend. This is particulary diffiult if you have young children, you need to weigh up whether you love your job enough , or whether you need to move on.
6How can I be sure that I will be promoted, if I get a Medical Sales position?
You definitely need to be prepared to work very hard, constantly evaluate your own performance, give constructive input at meetings, study further (Sales or Marketing Management), and make sure you are a co-operative team member who encourages and assists your colleagues. Keep away from all team or company politics and support management.
7If I am a Medical Sales Representative will I be doing “cold calling” all day?
No, in most cases you will be in a position where you call on the same customers regularly. It is up to you to build, friendly, trusting, relationships as soon as possible.
